COMPETITION: Compiler and Operating System Optimization for Low Power Computing
Samsung Research Center in Moscow conducts a contest of promising projects and ideas in the following topics.

Project Subjects and Topics of Interests:

  • Static and dynamic compilation strategies to reduce power and energy consumption.
  • Architecture-level power analysis, power efficient instruction issue mechanisms, experimental analysis of low power cache organizations.
  • Performance/Power usage profiler for applications.
  • Quantitative evaluation of power and energy consumption for general and special purpose applications.
  • Application tuning for efficient battery utilization.
  • Strategies for multi-criteria optimization involving power, performance, cost, etc.
  • Operating system solutions for low power including dynamic power management policies and energy efficient scheduling strategies.

Samsung's Exhibition of Digital Technologies in Moscow
The Exhibition will take place from 10 till 27 August 2002 at the New Manege in Moscow Dowtown (Georgievsky per. 3/3, bldg.3). You'll be able to get acquainted with the newest company products and worldwide renowned goods alike.

Samsung Electronics was among the pioneers in the area of digital technologies. First presented in early 2002 the Digital Freedom concept became an embodiment of a new lifestyle according to Samsung. It aimed at the full convergence of digital appliances and networks, at providing customers with the access to any network services with no restrictions either in time or space. The Digital Technologies Exhibition is expected to represent Samsung's achievements in this field convincingly and in full scale.

SRC participated in the Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage
The Joint International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage was held on 7-11 July 2002 in Waikoloa, Hawaii, USA. Among 323 participants and 167 adopted papers there were representatives from our R&D Center with paper "DVD System Software Simulator" that was presented at the conference Poster Session.

The paper is devoted to the software tool developed for the optical disk drive functions simulation. Disks of DVD-ROM/R/RW/RAM and CD-ROM/R/RW formats are supported. Modeling of DVD pick-up head optics with laser beam guidance servo loops dynamics is included. The paper captured the attention of the conference participants and many questions were answered during a discussion.

Totally the specialists from Samsung Electronics presented two oral reports and six poster presentations at the forum

Samsung Optical Design Center opened on 2 July 2002

Following 4-months of intensive negotiations the leading industrial company Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd reached an agreement with one of the most famous Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman and established a very important dedicated Center of Optical Design on the basis of the Scientific-Educational Complex of Radioelectronics, Laser and Medical Technologies headed by the famous Russian scientist Prof. Valery Rozhdestvin.

The creation of the Center is the recognition of the profound background of the Bauman University in optical science and a very important step towards mutually beneficial cooperation between the University and Samsung in one of the most promising areas of high technologies.

The creation of such a Center was blessed and welcomed by the Rector of the BMSTU Prof. Igor B. Fyodorov and the General Director of the Representative Office of Samsung Electronics Vice President Nae Sung Park, who greeted the researchers and wished them new achievements in joint work to the benefit of the society.

The Samsung Center of Optical Design will be the advanced post of new optical technologies development and a real test site for new solutions and breakthrough technologies.

Young Scientist Day was carried out in Novosibirsk by Samsung and Siberian branch of RAS
13-14 June 2002 Young Scientist Day took place in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. It was organized by Samsung and supported by Siberian branch of Russian academy of sciences. It aimed at encouraging young scientists to continue research activity by establishing beneficial scientific partnership between Korean private industry and Russian research organizations, providing additional incentives for Russian young scientists to stimulate their research and enlarge their international collaboration experience.

The competition was announced in February 2002 and covered the following scientific areas: Communication & Networking; Information Processing; MEMS; Material & Device; Polymer Chemistry and Biotechnologies. MSc or PhD researchers in the relevant technical areas, permanently living in the Siberian region of Russia could apply. Official language was English.

92 projects were sent. Expertise was carried out independently by SB RAS experts and representatives of Samsung Moscow office. Final decision was made by Samsung HQ in Korea who thoroughly examined all proposals. 44 projects from Siberian and Far Eastern institutes and universities were chosen for Young Scientist Day including 25 projects from Novosibirsk, 8 - from Tomsk, 3 - from Vladivostok, Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk and 1 from Kurgan, Barnaul and Omsk.
The winners were nominated after the technical sessions and presentations which were made 13-14 June in front of the expert committee. Expert committee consisting both of Samsung representatives and SB RAS experts evaluated not only scientific significance, applicability of the results of the projects but also author's presentational skills. Two first prizes (Pentium IV PCs) were given to Dmitry Sheglov (Institute of Semiconductor Physics, SB RAS, Novosibirsk) and Natalia Vaganova (Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics, SB RAS, Novosibirsk). 4 second prizes went to Julia Ponomarenko (Institute of Citology and Genetics, SB RAS, Novosibirsk), Dmitry Goroshko (Institute of Automation and Control Processes FEB RAS, Vladivostok), Sergei Panin (Institute of Strength Physics and Materials, SB RAS, Tomsk) and Sergei Zhidkov (Izevsk State Technical University, Izevsk). They got Samsung LCD monitors.
3rd prizes (Samsung cellular phones A300) were granted to Alexey Zaitsev (Favorsky Irkutsk Institute of Chemistry, SB RAS, Irkutsk), Denis Frolovsky (Novosibirsk State Technical University), Larisa Mironova (Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, SB RAS, Novosibirsk), Evgeny Cherkashin and Alexander Semenov (Institute of System Dynamics and Control Theory, SB RAS, Irkutsk). Besides all 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winners will go for a one week introductory trip to Korea and will have a visit to Samsung HQ. Expert committee marked the high level of the presented projects and decided to grant additional "challenging" prizes to Roman Markov (Institute of Automation and Electrometry, SB RAS, Novosibirsk), Julia Potapova (Institute of Catalysis, SB RAS, Novosibirsk) and Alexey Bielocerkowski (FSUE Research Institute of Semiconductors, Tomsk)
Director of Samsung Electronics Research Center in Russia, Vice President Mr. Park Nae Sung and Vice President of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology Dr. Yoon Seok Yeol expressed their satisfaction with the event and suggested the idea to have similar next year. Academician Nikolay L. Dobretsov and Corresponding Member of RAS Gennady N. Kulipanov, who also participated in the YSD final nomination of winners and granting of prizes, welcomed this idea.

The Young Scientists' Day in Siberia is organized by Samsung and supported by Siberian branch of Russian academy of sciences. It aims at encouraging young scientists to continue research activity by establishing beneficial scientific partnership between Korean private industry and Russian research organizations, providing additional incentives for Russian young scientists to stimulate their research.

Requirements for the project – applicability to new Samsung products and matching Samsung key scientific areas.

The selected projects will be presented at Young Scientist Day in Novosibirsk. The authors of the best projects will be awarded with special Samsung prizes and their work may form the basis of joint R&D research. Visit of Chairman K.H.Lee
Chairman of Samsung Mr. Kun-Hee Lee will visit Moscow in July 2001 as a Member of the International Olympic Committee to participate in its 112th Session.

Two landmark elections will highlight the 112th IOC Session in Moscow (12-16 July 2001) - the election of the Host City for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 and the election for the 8th IOC President. Osaka, Paris, Toronto, Beijing, and Istanbul are five bidding Candidate Cities to host the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.
